One of our industry's greatest challenges is gaining the trust of a new client. This is especially important for clients who have never before undertaken a major home improvement project. Concerns about quality and honesty, fair pricing and talent are all of paramount concern. An important distinction between one general contracting firm and another is the manner in which the client is presented with the estimate for the project. There are basically two approaches to this step. Many contractors present the lowest priced possible scenario with limited details and a quick turnaround time. This approach requires the least amount of time and experience on the part of the contractor. Split Rock's approach is to present our clients with an all-inclusive estimate with no surprises and with as much detail possible. This approach requires a significant investment of time on our part and can often give Split Rock's estimate the appearance of being more expensive than some of our competitors. However, it is the most transparent approach possible and provides the client with the information and choices necessary for such an undertaking. It is the correct way to do things and the first step in creating real value and trust. Click here to see a recent article written on our response to this topic on Nearsay's website.
We try to make it a point to share great finds with our colleagues and fans. LogoSnap is one of those finds. Have you experienced the frustration of trying to develop a new marketing campaign or graphic concept in-house, only to find that you spent way too much time to arrive at that same old conclusion? Or, have you ever hired a "creative" firm only to receive a big bill and a not so "creative" solution? LogoSnap is a one-stop, on-line creative hub for all manner of electronic and printed marketing campaigns.
Havana Film Festival Winning Design
We went to LogoSnap for help with several recent projects and got great results. This was the case when we decided to refresh our branded image and needed a new Logo Design, stationary and business cards for our firm. We also needed creative assistance when volunteering for the Havana Film festival and needed a new concept for the Gala invitations. The LogoSnap website reaches graphic designers on a 24/7 basis from around the world to compete for your winning design. From Holiday cards, stationary, websites to car wrap – it can all be designed online! We simply posted a creative brief, specified a reward and then launched the project. Within 24 hours we started receiving submissions back, each very unique and creative. You can either eliminate a designer’s submission or provide feedback and have the submission further refined. The only real difficulty to this amazingly creative platform was in deciding on the winner. If you haven’t tried the LogoSnap approach for your creative needs, we encourage you to do so. It’s like having your own graphic design team, but at a fraction of the cost.

We were recently introduced to Z Glass Design which fabricates the most unusual and beautiful glass designs we've seen yet. The glass is functional and structural and can be used as backsplash, countertops, dividing walls, art, floors, showers, etc. The list is quite extensive. The design can also be highly personalized, for example, a photo of one's child can serve as the artwork to the glass piece. Take a look at their website and check out their new showroom openings. http://www.zglassdesign.com/
Split Rock showed its continued support for the New York Landmark Conservancy while attending the 22nd annual Lucy G. Moses Award Dinner. Named in honor of philanthropist Lucy G. Moses, the Awards recognize the property owners, builders, architects, artisans, and designers who renew the beauty and utility of New York City’s incredible architecture. Restoration projects such as Grand Central Station and the Central Park Police Station are great examples of the results this wonderful organization makes possible. Always a fun event, the Lucy Moses Award Dinner brings together some of the most interesting people in our town around a topic so near and dear to our hearts.
We were shocked to learn that the general contracting industry has experienced a bad reputation at times! Seriously though, we all know a story about someone who hired a contractor who was all or some of the following: dishonest, not licensed, underinsured, untalented, incompetent or just simply indifferent to their clients' needs. Every industry has their share of these types. One of our clients, prior to hiring Split Rock, hired a contractor who demonstrated all of the above traits. Our client, a dentist by profession, hired the least expensive contractor and planned to renovate his medical facility during the week of vacation he had planned several months in advance. An unlikely success story from the start. Needless to say, things did not go well at all and so the many months long saga and disruption to his business began. Once hired, we renovated his office during the evenings and on weekends and were finally able to deliver the result our client expected. Unfortunately, this renovation cost him much more money, time and business disruption than he ever expected. Split Rock was happy to accompany him in court, testify on his behalf and help him achieve the maximum remedy available to him. Cheaper can often be the most expensive option there is!
We were delighted to attend a week long event hosted by the Huntsville Museum of Art in Huntsville Alabama. One of the highlights of the week was attending a talk given by Gloria Vanderbilt discussing the new book authored by Wendy Goodman about Gloria's life, The World of Gloria Vanderbilt. We have had several ocassions to spend time with Gloria and are always amazed to be in the company of someone who epitomizes a chapter right out of American history. So talented at so many things, Gloria in particular is one of our favorite artists and we are so fortunate to own several of her paintings. The Gala event was a beautiful evening directed by our dear friend Christopher Madkour and his amazing team. Additionally, there were the silent and live auctions and the fabulous tour of the surrounding gorgeous antebellum homes. A great time in a great city spent with fabulous people.
